GWERU City Council says it requires about $43 million to rehabilitate its sewer system, which has become obsolete.

City engineer, Robson Manatsa said the money was needed to overhaul the two treatment plants Cambridgeshire and Outfall as well as seven pump stations.
“At Cambridgeshire plant which serves the whole of Mkoba $15 million is required for the rehabilitation of the plant,” he said during a tour of the plants on Wednesday.
“A total of $43 million is needed to refurbish the two sewer plants (Cambridgeshire and Outfall) and the seven pump stations. The trickling filters at Cambridgeshire are down while the rotating arms at the filters are also not working.”
Manatsa said two out of three ponds at Cambridgeshire also needed to be rehabilitated while two out of the three pumps at the plant’s pump station needed replacement.
In 2016, the council was fined by the Environmental Management Agency (Ema) after being found guilty of discharging 30 megalitres of raw sewage from Cambridgeshire into the nearby streams.
The tour was part of a three-day peer review engagement being carried across the 32 urban councils in the country where the committees (peer review) assess local authorities on five indicators including water supply, waste water management, solid waste management, public safety and corporate governance.
Meanwhile, some residents of Riverside suburb have gone for two weeks without water following a pipe burst.
Manatsa said they were working flat out the restore normal water supplies to the area.
