HARARE – Rescue efforts in Zimbabwe are currently being carried out after 100 people lost their lives and at least 500 others are still missing due to Cyclone Idai.

Rescuers are in a race against time to reach the missing before its too late, all this under the watchful eyes of survivors lucky enough to have escaped but now in anguish as they wait hoping their loved ones and neighbors might be among those still coming in the next flight.

The storm struck overnight on Friday after first smashed into central Mozambique, whose president, Filipe Nyusi, said on Monday that at least a thousand people there may have perished.

More than a hundred houses in Ngangu township in Chimanimani were destroyed by heavy rain, raging winds, and rolling rocks.

The structures are made of home-baked bricks and corrugated iron sheets.

Homes of this type are a familiar sight across Zimbabwe and are known for their resilience.

Zimbabwe ambassador to South Africa, David Hamadziripi, says that the death toll is likely to rise.
