THE Independence Flame is set to embark on a historic journey across Matabeleland South province ahead of the 46th Independence Day celebrations, passing through important liberation-era sites as a testimony of the nation’s enduring spirit of freedom.

In a statement, the National Museums and Monuments of Zimbabwe (NMMZ) said the routing of the flame has been designed to reflect the inclusive nature of the Second Republic’s developmental programmes.

“As the preparations for the ‘Zim@46’ Independence celebrations gather momentum, tremendous work is taking place at various sites within Matabeleland South province, which will host the eagerly awaited commemorations,” the NMMZ said.

The flame’s journey will officially begin in Beitbridge district, with the official launch set for April 10, 2026 at Zezani.

Vice President Dr Constantino Chiwenga is expected to lead the ceremony at the historic site, which served as a critical assembly point after the liberation struggle.

Following the inaugural proceedings at Zezani, the Flame will begin its symbolic procession across the province.

It will first pass through Gwanda district, before moving to Insiza and Umzingwane districts.

The journey will then conclude its circuit by passing through the western reaches of the province, traversing both Bulilima and Mangwe districts.

The relay will culminate in a second lighting ceremony at Ratanyana in Matobo district on April 17, 2026, which will be presided over by Vice President Kembo Mohadi.

The main celebrations will be held the following day in Maphisa on April 18.

A team from the NMMZ comprising Messrs Phineas Chauke, Kennedy Chinyama and  Bernard Mupangapanga has been on the ground engaging the provincial and district leadership to ensure a seamless programme.

“The reconnaissance team is working closely with the Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution Cde Albert Nguluvhe, the district development coordinators, as well as other Government actors,” the NMMZ added.

The NMMZ emphasised that the exercise is in line with the whole-of-Government approach.

“The main objective of this exercise is to map the route . . . in order to have a successful programme of events that reflects the inclusive nature of all Government programmes under the able guidance of the President . . . under the mantra ‘leaving no one and no place behind’,” the statement further reads.

The Independence Flame represents the “enduring spirit of Zimbabwe” and serves as a solemn reminder of the nation’s history and resilience.

By visiting historic sites, the Government aims to honour the sacrifices of heroes who fought for the “Rainbow Province” and the nation at large.

The NMMZ added: “This exercise is also meant to lay the groundwork for mobilising people to come in their numbers to the main celebrations in Maphisa.”
