JOURNALISTS have been urged to intensify their reporting on road safety, as their work plays a crucial role in reducing accidents and saving lives.
The call was made by Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Dr Jenfan Muswere in a speech delivered on his behalf by the ministry’s director of media services, Mr George Chisoko, during the 2025 Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe (TSCZ) Media Awards ceremony in Harare.
Minister Muswere said as the country approaches the Easter and Independence holidays — a period generally marked by increased road traffic accidents — journalists must remain vigilant in raising public awareness.
“Your continued dedication to this cause contributes significantly to our national road safety efforts,” said Dr Muswere.
“As we approach the Easter and Independence holidays, a time when road accidents typically increase, your role becomes even more critical. I urge all media professionals to continue their excellent work in road safety reporting.
“Your efforts are instrumental in saving lives and creating a safer Zimbabwe for all.”
The awards ceremony saw journalists from Zimbabwe Newspapers (Zimpapers) dominate multiple categories.
Fatima Bulla-Musakwa emerged as the Best Consistent Reporter of the Year, with Emmanuel Kafe and Freeman Razemba securing first and second runner-up positions, respectively, in the same category.
Razemba further clinched the Best Print Media Reporter of the Year (first runner-up) award, while Theseus Shambare was named second runner-up.
In the electronic media category, Folake Saije from Zimpapers Radio shone, winning the Best Electronic Reporter of the Year — Radio (first runner-up) and Best Female Reporter of the Year — Broadcast (first runner-up).
Other notable winners included Star FM’s Tanyaradzwa Kutaura, who was second runner-up for Best Electronic Reporter of the Year — Radio, while the radio station’s Rumbidzai Venge took the top honours in the same category.
Zimpapers also claimed the prestigious title of Best Electronic Media House of the Year, cementing its reputation as a leading force in road safety journalism.
TSCZ board chairperson Mr Kura Sibanda said the media is a powerful tool that should be used to increase awareness about road safety.
“The media, due to its power and ability to influence decisions and policies, educate, set the agenda, provide information and its watchdog role, can help in ending this cancer called road carnage that has permeated our society, killing children, fathers and mothers,” he said.
