Let’s take a bow for fathers
Latwell and son Alwin.

Today I find myself writing about something that is quite conflicting and at the same time important to do so. Issues around Father’s Day can divide opinions as we have responsible and irresponsible fathers.

But whatever, the situation we are in, they remain our fathers.

This is a very emotional moment for those whose fathers have let them down, whose fathers have neglected them in their time of need. While a good moment for those whose fathers have contributed greatly towards their upbringing. For many, this is a joyous time to celebrate the incredible dad in their life.

For others, it can bring about a flurry of other emotions. Fathers have the potential to bring security, love, wisdom, and so much more to their children. But, as many know, the absence of a father can cause great hurt and a sense of abandonment.

Bear with me it’s part of life. Whatever your situation I feel you and may God be with you in every stage you are going through regarding your relationship with your fathers.

Tomorrow, the world commemorates Father’s Day which is a special occasion to acknowledge and appreciate the love, support, and sacrifices that our fathers have made for us.

There are many heart-warming stories of fathers who have gone above and beyond to provide for their families and have left a lasting impact on their children’s lives.

Some of the most beautiful stories surrounding Father’s Day include dads who have overcome adversity to be present in their children’s lives, fathers who have sacrificed their happiness and well-being to provide for their families, and dads who have shown unconditional love and support.

For instance, there are stories of fathers who have worked multiple jobs to put their children through school, dads who have been strong and supportive role models for their children, and fathers who have done everything in their power to raise their children to be happy and successful. Overall, the good stories of honouring Father’s Day remind us of the significant role that fathers play in our lives and the importance of showing appreciation and gratitude for all that they do.

Being a father takes a lot of responsibilities and the words, honour your father, appear many times throughout the bible.

It’s one of the ten commandments right alongside, “Honour your mother. And this is the first command that provides a promise, “… so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth in Ephesians 6:1-4.

This week we take a bow to our fathers who have contributed immensely towards our upbringing. Remember, appreciating our fathers does not mean that we don’t appreciate our mothers or anyone who has contributed to our growing up.

This week, we are for fathers alone. Some of us have issues with our fathers for many reasons but the fact we are born of them means we should give them some honour.

Over the years, children have fought their fathers for failure to be responsible, while some have disowned them for not taking care of them.

Father’s Day is a beautiful day that acknowledges and appreciates the important role played by our fathers in raising us and consequently building a stronger society.

This principle of honouring your father isn’t only for young children still living at home. It’s also for adult children who may very well be fathers now themselves. The Bible teaches us that we reap what we sow (Galatians 6:7).Though fathers have been revered at all times by civilisations across the globe, ironically what was missing until the last century was the official recognition of the significance of fathers in one’s life.

This is a special day to honour our fathers. It’s a special occasion that honours the contribution of fathers toward the upbringing and development of their children.

The worst scenario is seeing a father disowning their children for reasons known to them.

Being a reporter has let me see these issues at the courts where issues of child maintenance are rocking daily. But I will not dwell much into such issues, allow me to say, if you have a father, give him some honour. If your father is wherever he is and has done nothing towards your life, may God comfort you.

As a father shows compassion to his children, so the Lord shows compassion to those who fear him. Fellow students, this is the time to appreciate our fathers. Their contribution is immense towards achieving our dreams. As we take on our academic fight, fathers are always working towards us getting the fees, and support. Honouring a father is a concept that has been present in many cultures throughout history.

In some societies, it is considered a moral obligation for children to respect and honour their fathers. This can take many forms, such as showing gratitude, obedience, or simply spending time with them. In Christianity, honouring one’s father is one of the ten commandments given by God to Moses on Mount Sinai.

The commandment states: “Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee” (Exodus 20:12). This commandment is seen as a way to show respect for one’s parents and to maintain family unity. This verse emphasizes the importance of treating parents with kindness and respect, even in difficult situations. Of late I have noticed that some children are having some confrontations with their parents.

I have seen children dragging their parents to courts over altercations and it’s worrying when we see children fight their parents. But when we reach such extremes, we begin to disobey the commandments God gave us. While some will argue that the commandments may not be practical, fellow students we still have to give respect to these people.

Whether a father has done something bad to us, we still have to honour them. Despite having some irresponsible fathers who have abandoned their children, let’s find a way to pray for them.  I will cite the story of the son who dressed his father in the Bible where in Genesis 9:22-27, Noah became drunk and lay naked in his tent.

His son Ham sees him and tells his brothers, who then cover their father without looking at him. When Noah finds out, he curses Ham and blesses his other sons. The stories demonstrate the importance of respect for parents where Ham’s lack of respect causes him to be cursed, while Jacob’s deceit leads to familial strife and ultimately, reconciliation.

Honouring our fathers has been seen as a way to maintain family unity, show respect for parents, and uphold important moral values.

There are many ways to celebrate the day, you can plan a special outing or organise a family gathering to spend quality time together.

No matter how you choose to celebrate Father’s Day tomorrow, the most important thing is to let your father or father figure know how much they mean to you. Remember to take the time to show your appreciation not just on Father’s.

Father’s Day is an annual celebration on June 18, and it honours fathers and father figures for their contributions to the lives of their children.

This special day provides a wonderful opportunity to show love and appreciation to men who have played an important role in our lives.
