HURUNGWE rural district’s longest-serving  councillor Faro Maga has died.

Maga, who was re-elected last month to represent ward 24 on a Zanu PF ticket, died at the Chinhoyi Provincial Hospital on Tuesday last week and was buried at his rural home on Thursday last week.

He was 66.

In an interview, council’s acting chief executive officer Felistus Muteta described Maga as one of the district’s longest-serving policymakers who joined council in 2013.

She defined him as a development-oriented policymaker.

He passed on hardly a week after being sworn-in to serve his third term.

“We have lost one of the best policymakers and sons of Hurungwe who contributed well during the previous two terms,” said Muteta.

“His debates during full council meetings were well versed on development of the district and outlying rural communities. The loss is not only to his family and constituency, but to the district as a whole.”

Meanwhile, a Hurungwe man was trampled to death by an elephant on Wednesday last week.

Mashonaland West provincial police spokesperson Inspector Margaret Chitove confirmed the death of Macron Japajapa from Nehanda village under Chief Kazangarare. She said Japajapa was part of a 10-man gang which went on a gold panning expedition along the wildlife-infested Zambezi Valley escarpment.

“I can confirm the sad sudden death incident of Macron Japajapa after he was attacked and trampled on by an elephant near Mukwichi River under Chief Kazangarare,” said Chitove.

She said the late Japajapa was in the company of his brother Knowledge Japajapa (23) and eight other villagers from the same area.

Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZimParks) spokesperson Tinashe Farawo  confirmed the incident.

According to ZimParks, 138 human-wildlife conflicts were recorded countrywide during the first quarter of this year.
