THE Veterinary Services Department (VSD) in Manicaland has lifted the quarantine order in parts of Chipinge District following the containment of a deadly anthrax outbreak that threatened the provincial herd.
The outbreak occurred last month after the death of 12 cattle, prompting an immediate Government response.
In response to the outbreak, the Government launched a vaccination programme, administering vaccines to over 9 000 cattle in the affected areas.
A 30-day quarantine order was imposed, restricting livestock movement in and out of key locations, including Chisuma, Maparadze, Mahenye, Mutandahwe and Vheneka dip tanks.
Provincial epidemiologist Dr Innocent Chabanga confirmed the lifting of the quarantine order, attributing the success to the intensive vaccination efforts.
“The outbreak of anthrax has been contained in Manicaland province. More than 9,000 cattle in risk areas were vaccinated against the disease. Farmers from these areas are now free to move, sell, or consume meat from their livestock,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health and Child Care reported three new cases of anthrax in Gokwe North for the week ending April 13, 2025, with no fatalities recorded.
Cumulative figures now stand at 52 cases with zero deaths, as posted on the ministry’s X (formerly Twitter) handle.
Farmers in the region have welcomed the lifting of the quarantine order, which allows them to trade their livestock — cattle, goats, and sheep — in excellent condition. The favourable grazing conditions and abundant water have contributed to the overall health of the animals, making them ideal for trade.
Mr Norman Makwaya from Vheneka expressed gratitude to the government for its prompt action.
“Our cattle were vaccinated and protected from this dangerous disease. This is the peak season for selling our livestock, and we receive good rains, so there is plenty of grass to feed them. A lengthy ban would have severely affected us, as we mainly supply abattoirs in Chipinge and Chiredzi,” he said
The successful containment of the anthrax outbreak and the lifting of the quarantine order has brought relief to the farming community in Manicaland, allowing them to resume normal trading activities while ensuring the health of their livestock.
