Mnangagwa walks freely in Harare, smiles at journalists

Zimbabweans in the capital were amazed this afternoon to see their new President Emmerson Mnangagwa  walking around the streets of Harare like an ordinary citizen – unencumbered by CIO details or other security personnel.

Mnangagwa is reported to have rejected the use of his predecessor Robert Mugabe’s expensive, bullet-proof Mercedes Benz S-600 Pullman limousine, is currently driving in a civilian second hand Mercedes Benz.

“President Mnangagwa walked past me today in his way to meet a Chinese business delegation. He politely smiled, greeted me and other journos. We are so used to being pushed aside by Mugabe’s security,” wrote Al Jazeera journalist Haru Mutasa this afternoon.

Mnangagwa has said that he is cutting down the number of government ministries in order to improve efficiency and cut costs.

What a clever man he is to show the people that he is of the people. Respect to the President. Mug’s motorcades were ridiculous and showed what a coward he really was before being disgraced into retirement. No doubt this will save millions of dollars per annum too.

Good but early days. A newly married wife can “even greet dogs and cats” – wait till they settle in! The former president talked of turning guns into ploughs before turnings them into matchets! The early signs are good though.

The story would have been believable if there were pictures to accompany the claim.

I can remember seeing Mr Smith driving a Peugeot, no motorcade and the only other person in the car was his wife Janet. This was in 1977.
