THE Zimbabwe National Army modernisation programme to ensure the forces remain professional, well-equipped and prepared to respond to the changing dynamic security environment remains a priority, the service commander, Lieutenant-General Asher Walter Tapfumaneyi, has said.

He made the remarks yesterday, while making a closing address to the Commander ZNA Skill At Arms Meeting shooting competitions at Cleveland Rifle Ranges on the outskirts of Harare. The competitions are aimed at assessing and improving the shooting standards of security services while also providing an interaction with civilian shooting clubs.

It was running under the theme “Demystifying the gun, Building trust through sport for the attainment of Vision 2030”.

Lt-Gen Tapfumaneyi said the Government was working on a range of interventions aimed at making ZNA a formidable force ready to respond to any eventuality.

“As Commander Zimbabwe National Army, I am aware and seized with the challenges affecting the force for both personnel and equipment, as well as conditions of service.

“Efforts are underway to address a wide range of challenges that you and the organisation are facing in your individual capacities. In this regard, the modernisation of the ZNA’s capabilities is one of my priorities and very soon you will start to see the installation of modern equipment throughout the organisation for operational readiness and be capable of responding rapidly to any eventuality.”

Management and welfare of troops and keeping them posted on pertinent issues that had direct bearing on their well- being, security, calling on commanders to take responsibility.

He said it was pleasing to note that the civilian society and corporate partners continue to support ZNA activities.
