IN a sweeping operation against lawless public transport operators, nine commuter omnibus drivers and conductors were arrested for reckless driving after they were caught on camera mounting pavements in Harare’s Central Business District, putting countless pedestrians in danger.

The suspects — identified as Innocent Vera (31), Archford Dhlamini (34), Justice Mukucha (23), Isaac Danzvara (30), Moses Mandimutsira (17), Ashley Kandonga (30), Trymore Nyakabau (29), Liberty Kudzange (34) and Leo Zuze (34) — were taken into custody yesterday (Friday).

Their dangerous manoeuvres were seen as they attempted to evade police, putting pedestrians at serious risk.

One alarming incident occurred near an embassy office on Speke Avenue, forcing clients to take cover as a commuter omnibus sped by, highlighting the reckless nature of their driving.

Harare provincial police spokesperson Inspector Luckmore Chakanza confirmed the arrests, emphasising that law enforcement is on high alert.

“We have deployed police officers on every street to tackle this menace,” he said.

“The drivers were captured on various CCTV cameras, which led to their identification and subsequent arrest.”

Inspector Chakanza reiterated the police’s zero-tolerance stance on reckless driving: “We continue to warn all drivers and conductors whose actions threaten public safety. Their days are numbered.”

The suspects are currently detained Harare Central Police Station facing charges of reckless driving and endangering public safety.
