The structure of the New Parliament Building is almost complete with Government officials expressing confidence that they are ahead of schedule and will meet the completion deadline next year.

The building is being constructed by the Shanghai Construction Group using a grant of approximately $98 million (RMB 676,43 million) extended to Zimbabwe by the Chinese government.

The six-storey structure has a construction time frame of 32 months, but the contractor is optimistic of completing the project ahead of schedule in 29 to 30 months.

In an interview yesterday, Local Government, Public Works and National Housing, principal director, Colonel Joseph Mhakayakora (Retired) said there were no major setbacks in the construction of the New Parliament.

He said construction was going on well and they were now concentrating on the last floor.

“Construction of the new Parliament is going on well and we are still ahead of the schedule. We have no hurdles and we hope to meet the deadline,” he said.

“We are now concentrating on the structural frame, the retaining wall and storm water drains. The outer building is now at the last floor. We are working on the deck of the outer park and the roof of the general assembly.”
