HARARE – The National Social Security Authority (Nssa) has reviewed
retirement and survivor’s grants for 5 500 people who received their
payouts between April 2009 and January 2011.
A grant is a once off payment to members who would have contributed to
Nssa for less than 10 years.
At that time, the authority used the value of an average family basket of
basic items, which was estimated at $20, as a benchmark in determining the
payouts since the Zimbabwe dollar had become defunct.
Consequently, retirees were paid $25, while $10 was allocated to
dependants of a deceased retiree.
Cognisant of the need to compensate contributors fairly, Nssa management
decided to use Statutory Instrument 60 of 2011 that stipulates $150 as the
monthly insurable earning for all Zimbabwean dollar contributions, to
recalculate grants for the affected retirees or beneficiaries.
Nssa’s acting chief social security officer Shepherd Muperi said those
affected would be paid their dues, less the amount they received in 2009.
“We are appealing to anyone who received the $25 retirement grant or $10
survivor’s grant to provide the Authority with their current bank account
details to enable us to transfer the balance of their dues,” said Muperi.
The details can be submitted to any Nssa office.. The review does not
apply to recipients of monthly pension payouts.
