THE Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development has announced a temporary and partial closure of Matopos Road as Government moves to implement planned essential rehabilitation works aimed at improving road safety and traffic flow.
In a public notice, the ministry said the works will affect the stretch from Cecil Avenue to the Matabeleland South boundary and will be carried out in two phases from 2 February to 16 February.
The intervention is part of ongoing efforts to modernise the country’s road network and address wear and tear on key urban routes that carry significant traffic volumes.
Phase One of the project will run from 2 February to 6 February, covering the section between Cecil Avenue and Four Winds Shopping Centre.
Phase Two will follow from 10 February to 16 February, focusing on the stretch from Four Winds Shopping Centre to the Matabeleland South boundary.
The ministry said traffic will not be completely halted but will be managed through partial closures to allow construction teams to work safely while maintaining movement of vehicles.
“Being a heavily built-up area, traffic shall be rerouted around working areas using all available internal residential roads,” the ministry said. “Heavy vehicles will be temporarily restricted from accessing construction zones.”
Motorists travelling during Phase One are advised to use Cecil Avenue and Surrey Road into Napier Avenue as alternative routes.
During Phase Two, traffic will be diverted through Old Gwanda Road and Friendly Road.
The ministry urged drivers to exercise caution when approaching the affected zones, obey all traffic signs and follow instructions from traffic control personnel who will be deployed along the corridor.
“To ensure the safety of all motorists and construction personnel, and to facilitate a smooth flow of traffic, the public is strongly advised to drive with caution and reduced speeds through the affected areas and allow for extra travel time in their schedules,” reads part of the notice.
Matopos Road is a key link for residents, businesses and cross-boundary traffic and the rehabilitation works are expected to improve the road surface condition, extend the lifespan of the infrastructure and enhance overall driving comfort once completed.
