THE Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) have released the names of the two men who died on Monday in a suspected dynamite explosion near Chikuti in Karoi, as investigations into the tragic incident continue.

ZRP Mashonaland West’s acting spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Belinda Nyazire, confirmed that Zvondai Magudhu (28) of 4B Nyamahape Resettlement, Karoi, and Divine Chikwanda (29) of Kasimure Township were killed instantly after the explosives they were carrying detonated.

The two men were buried on Wednesday. The two were travelling from Kasimure Township towards Village 11, Pote Resettlement, on an unregistered motorcycle when the explosion occurred.

Police suspect the men were transporting dynamite explosives destined for use at an unregistered mine in the area.

“The deceased had travelled approximately seven kilometres from Kasimure when an explosion was heard by villagers,” said Assistant Inspector Nyazire.

“Members of the community rushed to the scene and discovered scattered human body parts and motorcycle debris.”

One of the villagers, Mr Wonder Malunga, alerted the police at Zimbabwe Republic Police Kasimure Post, prompting officers to attend the scene.

The remains of the deceased were later conveyed to Karoi District Hospital, where post-mortems were conducted.

Police strongly warned against the illegal handling and transportation of explosives, saying such actions pose a serious threat to human life and the environment.

“Police urge members of the public to desist from using dangerous explosives illegally as this poses great danger to human life and causes environmental destruction,” added Asst Inspector Nyazire.

“Handling of unknown objects should be avoided at all costs, and any suspicious activities or items must be reported to the relevant authorities.”
