A 41-year old Shurugwi has been arrested for growing 104 plants of marijuana in his garden.

Midlands provincial police spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko yesterday confirmed the arrest of Pascal Mathe on Tuesday following a tip off by members of the public.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirms the arrest of Mathe aged 41 of Peak farm in Shurugwi on allegations of cultivating dagga in his garden,”Mahoko said.

“The suspect was caught red-handed while weeding a dagga plantation by a team of police officers following a tip-off from the public.

“A total of 104 plants of dagga measuring between three to five metres tall were uprooted and taken to Shurugwi police station as exhibits.”

Mahoko could not give the exact value of the cannabis but said Mathe was expected to appear in court anytime soon.

He urged members of the public to desist from dealing in dangerous drugs saying they faced punishment if convicted in court.

“Section 156(1)(b) of the criminal law(codification and reform) act chapter 9:23 says any person who unlawfully cultivates, produces or manufactures a dangerous drug for the purpose of dealing in it shall be guilty of any offence,” he said.

The arrest follows a countrywide increase in the abuse of dangerous substances particularly among the youths.
