Three people died when the vehicle they were travelling in was swept away as they were crossing a flooded river along the Mashava–Downlands gravel road in the Mashava area in Midlands Province.

The driver of the vehicle survived.

Midlands Provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko, confirmed the tragic accident.

“I can confirm that three people died, while one survived when the motor vehicle they were travelling in was swept away by a flooded river along the Mashava – Downlands gravel road on March 3 at about 4 pm,” he said.

Insp Mahoko said that the incident occurred at Nyanyange River Bridge, which was underwater due to flooding following heavy rains.

“It is alleged that Courage Musvuti (27) of Beatrice, Seke, was driving a Ford Ranger Wild Track, carrying three passengers. Upon reaching Nyanyange River Bridge, he attempted to cross, and the vehicle was swept away,” he said.

Insp Mahoko said Musvuti managed to get out of the vehicle and swam to safety while the three passengers were trapped inside the vehicle.

“The following day, local villagers retrieved three bodies from the vehicle. They were identified as bodies of; Ishmael Zimhindo (30) of Habard Farm, Beatrice, Talent Piruke (23) and Skylar Ruvarashe Musvuti (2), both of Beatrice, Seke,” he said.

Insp Mahoko urged motorists not to risk their lives and those of their passengers by crossing flooded rivers.

“Instead, they should wait for the water to subside before crossing,” he said.
