TRANSPORT and Infrastructural Development Minister Felix Mhona has expressed sorrow and extended condolences to the families of 13 people who died in two separate road accidents on Wednesday.

In a statement, Minister Mhona conveyed the ministry’s grief over the tragic incidents, which occurred on major highways.

The first accident, a head-on collision at the 185km peg along the Harare-Nyamapanda Road, claimed 10 lives. The victims were travelling in a Honda Fit.

In a second, unrelated crash at the 32.5km peg along the Harare-Mutare Road, three people died and 15 others were injured when a commuter omnibus overturned following a tyre burst.

“The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development expresses its deepest sorrow following two tragic road traffic crashes on Wednesday, 17 December 2025,” Minister Mhona said.

“At the 185km peg along the Harare-Nyamapanda Road, 10 people lost their lives in a head-on collision. On the Harare-Mutare Road, at the 32,5km peg, three more people perished and fifteen others were injured when a commuter omnibus overturned after a tyre burst.”

He confirmed that survivors are receiving medical care and that the Ministry is monitoring their recovery.

“On behalf of the Ministry and the Government, we extend heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and wish the injured a speedy recovery,” the Minister stated.

With the festive season approaching, Minister Mhona issued a stern reminder to all transport operators, motorists, and the public to strictly adhere to road traffic regulations.

“These tragedies are a reminder to all . . . to strictly observe road traffic rules. Overloading and reckless driving will not be tolerated and the Ministry will intensify enforcement to safeguard the commuting public,” he warned.

He reaffirmed the Government’s dedication to improving road safety, stating, “The Second Republic remains committed to strengthening road safety through robust legal, policy, and administrative measures.”
