An Armesham Freight Private Limited truck driver appeared at the Gweru Magistrates Court on Monday facing charges of transporting unauthorised goods valued at ZAR 472 823 without his employer’s knowledge.
Douglas Tengende (53) was remanded in custody and will return to court on Tuesday.
The court heard that on October 28, the accused person left the country for Johannesburg, South Africa, to collect roofing tiles.
On November 2, Tengende arrived at Beitbridge Border Post on his way back. He was heading to Harare to deliver the tiles.
Beitbridge customs officials inspected Tengende’s truck and discovered unauthoried goods that were not part of the consignment that he had been sent to collect.
Tengende failed to declare the goods with a value of ZAR 472 823 to the customs officials.
This led to the seizure of the vehicle.
