GWANDA Municipality has threatened to take legal action against ratepayers with outstanding bills of over three months.The mining town revealed that it was owed in excess of $330 million by residents and corporate clients, saying this had compromised service delivery.
Council finance director Xolani Dube told journalists that residents owed council over $200 million and institutional clients such as government departments over $130 million.
In a notice to the ratepayers yesterday, Gwanda council said: “Notice is hereby given that accounts with balances owing by three months and above are being considered for litigation. The municipality wishes to advise defaulters to bring their accounts to good standing within the next 14 days or visit the debt control section at the main offices to make arrangements/payment plans to avoid legal costs, interest or loss of property.
“Any account remaining unpaid and without any agreed payment plan/arrangement after 14 days have elapsed shall be dealt with by the council lawyers at defaulters’ cost without any further notice.”
