Zimbabwe boasts a wide range of successful athletes that established a name in the international sports arena. As the country keeps developing in many different directions, it takes pride in its athletic achievements thanks to the sports stars that have left a mark on both the nation and the industry as a whole.

- Elizabeth Muriel Chase
Liz Chase is the first in our list as she is considered the most famous Zimbabwean athlete. Being a hockey player of the national team, she won the gold medal at the Summer Olympics in Moscow in 1980. Her career started in South Africa, where she got a degree in Physical Education while playing for the university varsity team. Later on, in 1973, she was invited to play for the South Africa B team, further representing the Springbok Ladies hockey team. After the Rhodesian Bush War in the 1970s, she continued her athletic path: she played for the Old Hararians club and worked at Oriel Girls High School in Salisbury as a P.E. teacher despite having lost friends and family. In the 1980s, she finally moved to South Africa and further took up a position as faculty at the physical education department at the University of Witwatersrand, leading to her retirement in 2015. On May 9, 2018 Chase died of cancer at the age of 68, yet still revered as the first appearing at the Olympics.

Nick Price used to be a professional golfer displaying the highest achievements of the sport. In 1980, he claimed his first European title and one year earlier was his first win in the Southern African Tournament. In the 1990s, Price had to face difficulties with the claiming his major golfing title, yet he won the PGA Championship and Open Championship at Turnberry in 1994. In 2003, Price established himself as the world’s most famous and Zimbabwe’s most renowned golfer.
- Susan Huggett
Born in 1964 in Bulawayo, Susan (“Sue” for short) Huggett is ranked the second most memorable Zimbabwean hockey player with global prominence. Hugget performed for the hockey national team at the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow, having the only option to compete in the Women’s Field Hockey Tournament as there was no African team at that time. However, after a late request to the African authorities, the team was assembled prior to the competition to ensure Zimbabwe’s success in the 1980 Games, which ended up a loss for the hosting USSR team.
- Benjani Mwaruwari
Benjani Mwaruwari is a top leading Zimbabwean striker. The Jomo Cosmos was his first career step, further leading him to join Grasshopper Club Zürich and Auxerre later on. After that, he went on to play for England’s most prominent clubs such as Manchester City, Sunderland, and Blackburn Rovers. Mwaruwari returned to South Africa in 2012 to compete for Chippa United and the Bidvest Wits. Once retired, he pursued a career in coaching the national team.
