Youth jailed for armed robbery

AN 18-year-old man has been sentenced to 12 years in jail for theft and armed robbery involving US$71 600.

Blessing Kambunu was found guilty of the offence by Harare Regional Magistrate Mrs Esthere Chivasa last Friday.

The magistrate suspended two years on condition that Kambunu does not commit the same offence in the next five years.

In her ruling, Mrs Chivasa said the court had taken into consideration that three people were robbed of their hard-earned US$71 600, hence the need for a custodial sentence.

“If a juvenile behaves like an adult, he deserves a hard sentence. This court will not treat this matter with kid gloves since the accused was the mastermind of the offence,” Magistrate Chivasa ruled.

In aggravation, prosecutor Ngoni Kaseke told the court that the fact that the accused was young did not take away the gravity of the offence.

Mr Kaseke said Kambunu committed the offence in a sophisticated manner, where there was a lot of planning involved.

“The accused is convicted of two serious crimes of theft and armed robbery. The State is also considering the youthfulness of the accused person.”

The complainants in this matter were Alfred Mhini, who is employed at Vista Pharmacy, Given Kimbini and Shingirai Mukura, a car dealer.

It was alleged that on May 26, 2023, Kambunu and his accomplices, who are still at large, hatched a plan to rob the complainants.

The State proved that Kambunu was armed with a pistol when he went to Vista Pharmacy, opposite Harare Showgrounds, with two getaway cars.

At around 7pm, the trio rushed into the pharmacy where the complainants were depositing money in Mhini’s office.

The court heard that the accused persons shot once through the window and instructed everyone to lie down. They further demanded cash from the complainants and Kambunu collected a total of US$71 600.

Kambunu is said to have fraudulently hired a Honda Fit using a driver’s licence which belonged to one Chirowodza after he stole it from his car in Cold Comfort.

On June 2 last year, Kambunu was arrested in Mvuma while driving a Honda Fit that was used in the robbery.

The accused persons were also captured on the CCTV while committing the offence using their two getaway vehicles.
