THIRTEEN Zanu PF activists from Insiza district, who include a local teacher and a ward councillor, are set to appear in court on November 29 facing charges of destroying their village head’s property following a dispute over land.

The accused allegedly stormed Ernest Nxumalo’s home on June 11 this year and destroyed property worth $11 000, accusing him of doling out pieces of land to people from outside the region.

Shame Mathe (a local teacher), councillor Edith Gumbo (45), Holiday Ndlovu, Virginiah Mathe, Eva Ndlovu, Sifikile Mathe, Nqobile Dlodlo (18), Esinathi Ncube, Kinana Dlodlo, Monica Mpofu, Abel Khumalo, Jennifer Dlamini and Thandiwe Ndlovu face 20 counts of malicious damage to property.

State allegations are that on June 11 this year, the group ran amok and destroyed Nxumalo’s property which includes huts and household property, accusing him of seeking to settle villagers who were coming from Nkayi to reclaim their forefathers’ land.

Nxumalo lost property worth $2 171. The other property belonged to 19 land seekers who had left their household goods at Nxumalo’s homestead for safekeeping as the land dispute turned ugly.

The matter was reported to police, leading to the activists’ arrest.
