ZIMBABWE has reaffirmed its commitment to advancing sustainable housing delivery solutions at the first session of the UN-Habitat Executive Board.
The meeting, held in Nairobi, Kenya, from April 21 to 22, brought together member States, experts and development partners to consider implementation of UN-Habitat resolutions and the 2026-2029 strategic plan focusing on delivery of affordable and adequate housing for all.
National Housing and Social Amenities Minister, Professor Paul Mavima, attended the meeting accompanied by Zimbabwe’s Ambassador to Kenya, Winpeng Moyo and senior Government officials from the ministry.
Delivering Zimbabwe’s statement, Prof Mavima outlined the country’s achievements in the provision of adequate and affordable housing, leveraging on the Zimbabwe National Human Settlements Policy, which establishes a conducive policy environment for human settlements players.
He said the Second Republic delivered one million houses during the National Development Strategy 1 period from 2020 to 2025, while housing delivery remains a top priority under NDS2, which targets another one million houses by 2030 through collaboration with the private sector and other stakeholders in the human settlements value chain.
“Our approach promotes urban densification, protection of agricultural land and inclusive development through initiatives such as the Presidential Title Deeds programme,” he said.
Prof Mavima also highlighted Government efforts on regularisation and social inclusion as some of the strategies being pursued in the country.
He added that the country remains committed to aligning housing policies with global frameworks and noted that platforms such as the UN-Habitat Executive Board provide opportunities for partnership engagements that can drive meaningful change.
Germany, the current chair, opened the session emphasising the Board’s role in guiding UN-Habitat’s strategic direction for the year ahead and called for focused and constructive engagements to support effective decision-making.
UN-Habitat executive director Ms Anaclaudia Rossbach expressed appreciation to the government of Kenya for its continued leadership and host-country support.
“The challenges before us are complex, but through meaningful dialogue and decisive action, we can drive real transformation,” she said.
