CloudWalk Technology has signed a strategic cooperation framework agreement with the government of Zimbabwe to provide facial recognition for a smart financial service network, as well as intelligent security applications at airports, and railway and bus stations, The Zimbabwe Mail reports.

The deal marks China’s first AI technology foray into Africa under its Belt and Road initiative, according to the Mail. Zimbabwe and China recently formed a comprehensive strategic partnership.

Under the agreement, CloudWalk will help the country set up a national facial recognition database, as part of what it described as a mass facial recognition project.

CloudWalk, which provides technology for China’s controversial “Police Cloud,” announced a $75 million funding round and confirmed a previous government grant late last year as it rapidly expands its operations.

Zimbabwe’s Electoral Commission recently selected Ipsidy to provide an AFIS system for its upcoming elections.
