Zimbabwe: Survivors still seek justice for Matabeleland killings

President Emmerson Mnangagwa was state security minister in the 1980s when at least 20,000 people were killed by the army, leading some to question if he can reform the country, given his past political allegiances.

Some in Zimbabwe question if President Emmerson Mnangagwa can sufficiently reform the country, given his controversial history as a close ally of long-time leader Robert Mugabe.

At least 20,000 people were killed by the army when Mnangagwa was the state security minister in the 1980s.

Al Jazeera’s Malcolm Webb spoke to some of the survivors, who are still seeking justice.

    I AM ONE OF THOSE PEOPLE WHO IS STILL SEEKING JUSTICE OVER OUR LOVED ONES WHO WERE JUST KILLED FOR NO REASON BY THE SO CALLED ZIMBABWEAN PRESIDENT MR EMERSON DAMBUDZO MNANGAGWA PLEASE OUR HEARTS ARE STILL BLEEDING AND THIS THING OF LET THE BY GONES BE BYGONES MAKES IT WORSE TO SOME OF US, HOW CAN YOU LET YOUR RELATIVE TO BE A BYGONE/ NOT BY THE WILL OF GOD BUT BY MNANGAGWA’S WILL? THIS IS VERY UNFAIR TO US WE NEED ANSWERS.
