MINNESOTA — Cecil the Lion-killer dentist Walter Palmer has reopened his Minnesota practice after six weeks in hiding amid international furore.

A newly-employed security guard stood at the door of the building in Bloomington yesterday morning, with a few vehicles in the car park.

However, repeated calls to the practice between 10:30am and midday went unanswered as the phone line appeared to be disconnected.

Palmer was spotted for the first time in almost two months on Sunday afternoon walking through the neighbourhood in a red t-shirt and blue jeans. He has not yet been seen entering or leaving the practice.

He has been in hiding since it emerged he was responsible for killing the beloved 13-year-old Cecil the lion during an illicit hunt in the Gwayi area.

Both the American and Zimbabwean governments are considering legal action against him.

In the past weeks, an array of animals he has killed — including moose, deer, buffalo, mountain lions and a polar bear — have also emerged.

And it was also revealed he ran into trouble with the law after killing a black bear in Wisconsin without a license.

He allegedly bribed the guides with $20 000 so they would lie about his criminal act and hide pictures of him proudly smiling next to the dead animal.

In 2008, Palmer pleaded guilty to felony charges of making false statements to the US Fish and Wildlife Service about the bear.

He was prosecuted because he shot and killed the animal outside of the authorised hunting zone, according to court documents.

Palmer faced up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $250 000. But he only paid $2 938 in fines and was sentenced to a year of probation after signing the plea agreement. — online
