Makonde district administrator Mrs Plaxidiah Chirongoma has been suspended on allegations of misappropriating part of collections for this year’s Independence Day celebrations.

Allegations are that Mrs Chirongoma collected about $11 000 from wards in Makonde for ward-based Independence celebrations.

Some wards raised the red flag when groceries for the celebrations were presented. They argued that it was not commensurate with the money they contributed. According to sources, at least $3 000 could not be accounted for.

“We got groceries which fell far short of what we had contributed for Independence Day commemorations. After seeing that the situation was not good, we instantly told them to keep their items so that they give us back our money to buy the foodstuffs on our own,” said a councillor who preferred anonymity.

Some councillors approached the Mashonaland West provincial leadership including provincial administrator Mr Mike Mazai and Minister of State for Mashonaland West Provincial Affairs Cde Faber Chidarikire with their grievances.

A committee to look into the allegations was set up days after the celebrations were held in various centres in the district, leading to the DA’s suspension.

According to sources, the letter of suspension was handed over to Mrs Chirongoma at the weekend.

Mrs Chirongoma has since handed over responsibilities to acting DA Mr Joseph Manyurapasi. She could not be reached for comment while the provincial administrator Mr Mazai declined to comment on the matter.
