Harare City Council and a Zambian company, Lamise Investments, have entered into a $4,5 million deal to install solar street lights. According to council minutes, the 15-year deal would see Lamise putting up solar streets lights along 16 streets in Harare at no direct cost to the local authority while, in return, the company would enjoy advertising rights on the streets lights installed.

Lights installation and commissioning would be completed in two phases with the first phase covering installation of 1 000 solar street lights along the selected streets and 1 900 during phase two.

The street lights would be first installed along city roads which include Julius Nyerere Way, Samora Machel Avenue, Jason Moyo Avenue, Kenneth Kaunda Avenue, 4th street, Robert Mugabe Way, Leopold Takawira Street, Nelson Mandela Avenue, First Street, Sam Nujoma, Angwa Street, Speke Avenue, George Silundika Avenue, Third Street, Herbert Chitepo Avenue and Borrowdale Road.

Under the deal, council would assist Lamise to obtain an exemption of duty with regards to the solar lights being brought into the country, grant advertising rights in the CBD and selected streets, approve all technical and engineering and drawings submitted by Lamise, among other obligations.

On the other hand, Lamise Investments would be responsible for installing and commissioning the lights, preparing all technical and engineering designs and maintaining solar street lights, advertising boards and advertising signs at its own cost.

Harare and Lamise signed the deal on October 28 this year.
