Zanu (PF) member of parliament for Bikita West, Munyaradzi Kereke, has been jailed for rape. Kereke was given 14 years by Harare magistrate Noel Mupeiwa, who suspended four years on condition of good behaviour. The magistrate today found him guilty of raping one of his wife’s nieces but no guilty of sexually molesting the other.
Kereke has been denying the offences, claiming to have been in the United States at the time.
The suspended prosecutor general, Johannes Tomana, had for years refused to prosecute Kereke on the grounds that there was not enough evidence to secure a conviction. This forced the family of the girls to seek a high court order compelling Tomana to give them a certificate to allow them to pursue a private prosecution for the crimes. They have now been vindicated in their belief that Kereke was indeed guilty.
