THE Zanu PF Matabeleland South provincial executive committee (PEC) yesterday demanded the ouster of national chairman Simon Khaya Moyo and Provincial Affairs minister Abedinico Ncube for allegedly working with Vice-President Joice Mujuru in a plot to unseat President Robert Mugabe.
This follows a similar recommendation by war veterans in Matabeleland North to have Moyo ousted for fanning factionalism.
Addressing the media after an emergency PEC meeting at the party’s provincial offices in Gwanda, acting Zanu PF chairman Rapelani Choeni said 27 out of 50 PEC members had recommended to the party’s central committee and the politburo that both Moyo and Ncube be barred from attending the congress.
“Simon Khaya Moyo allegedly failed to denounce factionalism as the chairman of the party. He also snubbed First Lady Dr Grace Mugabe rallies. He associated himself with (VP) Joice Mujuru and (political commissar) Webster Shamu, a group that is linked with a plan to unseat President Mugabe,” he said.
Choeni, who replaced ousted Andrew Langa, said the PEC also felt that Moyo had failed to supervise provincial chairpersons who were booted out in votes of no confidence across the country.
It had for long been thought Moyo had the Vice-Presidency in the bag, but a sudden twist of fortune sees his position under serious threat.
Zanu PF members seen as being aligned to Mujuru have in the past few weeks been purged on accusations of plotting to topple Mugabe, something heretical in Zanu PF.
Turning to Ncube, Choeni said the Provincial Affairs minister had unilaterally declared that Matabeleland South province was behind Simon Khaya Moyo for the post of Vice-President when the PEC and the politburo had not met to deliberate on the issue.
Choeni brandished a copy of the Sunday News of July 20 to 26 2014, where Ncube was quoted declaring his support for Moyo.
“We disassociate ourselves from such utterances and as the PEC, recommend that both Simon Khaya Moyo and Abedinico Ncube should not be part of this congress.”
Youth chairperson Washy Nkomo, parliamentarians Matthius Ndlovu, Obedingwa Mguni, Madodana Sibanda, Edson Gumbo and William Dewa attended the media briefing.
The Zanu PF congress got underway in Harare, with Mujuru and her allies expected to meet their waterloo.
