THE MDC-T yesterday fired 18 of its legislators who defected early this year and formed the MDC Renewal Team.

However, observers said the move, which was part of the MDC-T’s recent congress resolutions, was likely to haunt the opposition as the seats were likely to be won by the ruling Zanu PF in by-elections.

Newly-elected MDC-T secretary-general Douglas Mwonzora on Wednesday wrote to Speaker of Parliament Jacob Mudenda advising that the MPs had ceased to represent the party.

But, MDC Renewal Team spokesperson Jacob Mafume scoffed at the dismissal, describing the move as a legal nullity.

Addressing a Press conference yesterday, MDC-T spokesperson Obert Gutu said the fired MPs were Biti (Harare East), Willias Madzimure (Kambuzuma), Lucia Matibenga (Kuwadzana), Evelyn Masaiti (proportional representation), Paul Madzore (Dzivarasekwa), Bekhitemba Nyathi (Mpopoma/Pelandaba) and Moses Manyengavana (Highfield West).

Others were Albert Mhlanga (Pumula), Samuel Sipepa Nkomo (Lobengula), Roseline Nkomo (Tsholotsho North), Settlement Chikwinya (Mbizo), Judith Muzhavazhe (proportional representation) and Gorden Moyo (Makokoba).

Senators Sekai Holland (Chizhanje), Rorana Muchihwa (Chikomo) and Watchy Sibanda (Matabeleland South) were also booted out.
