THE main opposition MDC-T has encouraged students and children in secondary schools to join the “struggle” to rid Zimbabwe of President Robert Mugabe’s administration.

The party’s shadow education minister Heneri Dzinotyiwei told journalists at a Press briefing yesterday that the failure to retire by people over 60 years was hindering employment creation and young people must be seen to openly discuss these issues.

“When (former Rhodesian prime minister) Ian Smith declared the Unilateral Declaration of Independence, students from colleges and secondary schools all protested. Students have always been part of the struggle and they should join the battlefield now,” he said.

“Students must voice their concern, discuss the current climate and talk about the lack of jobs. We must encourage students to debate what is happening seriously.”

In the past few weeks, Zimbabwe has been on edge after protests erupted across the country, as citizens, angry with government’s failure to curb corruption and many other ills, took to the streets.

Dzinotyiwei said Zimbabweans over 60 years should retire to give space to youths.

“It is the only way to create employment. Those 60 and above should retire and that will allow the young to take up their positions. Those going into retirement could also be encouraged to go into business with proper structured financing from the banking sector,” he said.
