Mphoko said the government was willing to assist surviving companies to curb the closure of the remaining firms.

“A number of companies are closing because they cannot stand the heat. However, it is with great pleasure to note that while some companies are collapsing, other companies are doing very well. That is a patriotic approach to life,” he said.

“Some companies have managed to pull strings together to survive and as government we are willing to assist these companies because we are in the process of trying to revive our industries.”

Mphoko said it was the government’s mandate to assist firms that were striving to grow.

He said those in industry should not lose hope as it was in the government’s interest to assist firms that were showing competence.

Pump and Steel Supplies managing director Eugene Jackson said: “Bulawayo is not dying. There is a generation of companies working quietly and willing to grow. We are committed to achieving much more than we have done as long as government is willing to support us.”
