Mugabe forces Chihuri to retire

Police commissioner Augustine Chihuri is to leave the force at the end of 2014 after more than 20 years at the helm, according to senior army officers.

He is to be replaced by Trust Mugova, currently a major general with the Zimbabwe National Army based at KG IV Barracks, will take over from January 2015. The sources said Chihuri had tendered his resignation following intense political pressure.

“His Excellency (President Robert Mugabe) called him and told him he was no longer happy with his leadership at ZRP and directly advised him to step down. Chihuri obliged and immediately tendered his resignation,” said an army colonel on condition of anonymity.

Mugabe is reported to have quizzed the commissioner about his collapse at a police passing out parade this year before asking him if it was true that he belonged to the faction led by vice president Joice Mujuru.

Chihuri passed out during the graduation of police recruits and blamed it on a tight-fitting shoe. But there have been rumours for more than a decade that he is not in good health.

The resignation is seen as a coup for the Mnangagwa faction, which has publicly accused him of failing to arrest Mujuru for corruption. The prosecutor general, Johannes Tomana, has indicated that he will await a docket before prosecuting Mujuru.

Mugova, 56, is currently in charge of army administration and the sources described him as an affable and quiet person who is popular with the rank and file in the military for his professional approach.

Originally from Masvingo province, he owns a farm in Chivu and is a former freedom fighter. The sources said he was well educated and implied that his appointment was apparently at the Mnangagwa faction’s behest.

Meanwhile, an intelligence contact indicated that the prison services boss, Paradzai Zimondi, would also be retired soon. He was not sure who would replace him, but speculated that the new prisons boss would also come from the army.

“Zimondi will be going to his farm. He seems to be a victim of the current politics. But there is a technicality as they are saying he is now past retirement age,” said the source.

What does an Army general know about the Police? This is yet another example of the militarization of all national institutions under Mugabe.

Chihuri was one of the Zanla cadres, together Rugare Gumbo et.al, who were arrested for trying to block the ascendency of Mugabe to the Zanu presidency in 1975/6. So has been used for all the years and now the old fool fears these boys are up to no good could be plotting against him. Who on earth can plot to assassinate an old sick and dying old man. Rega ndiseke zvangu marema eZanu dambudziko renyu mese kusafunga.

ANY CHANCE OF A MATABELE TAKING TOP POSTS! NO WAY JOSE! ITS A MASHONA DOMAIN!

Why do you expect the position to go to a Matebele, why not a Tonga, Ndau or Kalanga ? The problem with your line of thinking is you seem to think Ndebeles and Shonas are of equal numbers, which is why you seem to expect every other post default to Ndebeles. Well whether you like it or not, the Shona a staggering 82% majority. The sooner your stop whining the better. For too long some people mistakenly assumed Zimbabwe’s population is divided equally between Ndebele and Shona. You better get used it, Shona people are not going anywhere.

It should be about the most suitable person for the job, regardless of tribe! Not that I support the current militarization of all public institutions by ZPF! In any case, who is Valerio Sibanda?

Very cynical, all these bosses are old and need to retire, they have done enough havoc on their part, who will retire the old Bob himself, I guess when the creator rings the bell and that is one bell everyone bows to.

After the 2008 general elections whose results went missing for more than 5 weeks which was rumoured to have been won by the MDC, some people indicated that mugabe had accepted defeat but was forced by the Security Commanders to continue as president against his wishes. Still others went to town suggesting that mugabe was held to ransom by the Securocrats as they were calling the shots whilst mugabe was was now being dictated to by them. I believe that this and other recent developments displayed by mugabe puts such rumours and lies to rest, as the man has an insatiable obsession for power.

It also sheds light to the accusations and allegations that the gallant fighters who were illegally arrested and imprisoned in Mozambique during the war could have not committed any crime at all apart from artculating their views regarding the way to shape the dstiny of their beloved country whereas mugabe was only interested in power and anyone who holds a different view from his is a rebel and ‘sell out’.

If people like Chihuri had forced mugabe not to accept electoral defeat in 2008, surely mugabe could have not treated him in this manner.

An almost 91 years “fit” Mugabe forcing a man as young as almost his first born to retire. Who is is more fit than the other. What a shame .

if only you could listen to the word of prophecy given to your leaders in high places regarding the best way forward to improve the country without basing on political lines war background but the Lord asked you not to look to the west or east but to him as he did in Uganda when believers sought for a divine solution from the creator. before anything happens God send warning signs through prophets but you do not listen we would have been somewhere today not to be the 2nd last of the poorest nations. my nation is rich but corrupt with corrupt leadership. uproot it you do not want because all are enjoying the game of cheating.
