PRESIDENT Robert Mugabe and the Equatorial Guinea leader Teodoro Obiang Nguema are expected in Harare late Friday although sources said changes to the schedule were still possible.

Mugabe is expected back in the country for the first time since he left in December last year for the Far East for his annual holiday while Nguema will be making his second visit to Harare since the two leaders became friends more than a decade ago.

While foreign affairs officials said they knew very little about Nguema’s visit impeccable sources insisted that his visit was “imminent”.   “No date had been given previously but he is arriving Friday. It has been hush hush maybe because Mugabe’s return is also not definite,” a source said in Harare.

According to the sources, Mugabe was initially expected at 5pm Friday but his plane had since been delayed and was now expected by 7pm. No reason was given for the delay.

Mugabe’s close relationship with Nguema dates back to 2004 when Zimbabwe intercepted mercenaries who were en-route to Malabo to overthrow the West African leader.

Last year, Mugabe visited Malabo while it was also reported that Zimbabwe sent members of the defence forces to train Equatorial Guinea’s troops.

Sources said Nguema’s visit was private.
