via Mujuru allies console Midzi family – NewZimbabwe 9 June 2015
SOME of the top Zanu PF officials who were punished with the late Amos Midzi turned up at his home in Harare Tuesday evening to console his family.
Midzi, a former cabinet minister and chairman for Zanu PF party’s Harare province, was found dead in his car at Munandi Farm in Beatrice on Tuesday morning.
The former Zimbabwe ambassador to the United States was recently suspended from the ruling party for five years over allegations he backed an alleged coup plot by former vice president Joice Mujuru.
Mujuru, also axed from the government and the party, denies the allegations and recently challenged Zanu PF to back its claims by prosecuting her.
Mourners were Tuesday evening gathered at Midzi’s Mt Pleasant home in the capital.
Among those who turned up were former ministers Olivia Muchena and Tendai Savanhu who have also been axed from their jobs for allegedly being part of the plot to topple President Robert Mugabe.
Current Zanu PF national commissar, Saviour Kasukuwere, was also among the mourners.
Midzi’s brother, Stanley, said the family was waiting for a post-mortem before finalising burial arrangements.
“A post-mortem is likely to be conducted tomorrow (Wednesday) and that is when we will issue a statement to the media about the results and funeral arrangements,” he said.
Meanwhile ZRP national spokesperson, Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba, said investigations were underway to ascertain the cause of Midzi’s death.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police would like to confirm the death of Mr Amos Midzi in a suspected poisoning case, which occurred in the morning of 9th June 2015 at Munandi Farm, Beatrice,” Charamba said in a statement.
“The body of the deceased was found in his vehicle a Ford Everest registration number ACY 3329 grey in colour with all doors locked.
“The Farm manager made a report to the Police and ZRP Beatrice together with CID Homicide and Pathologist attended the scene.
“The body was inspected and no injuries were noted. One (1) litre container of a liquid methanadophos which was three quarter full, dormicum tablets and a cup containing a bluish liquid were found in the vehicle.
“Investigations are in progress to ascertain the cause of death.”
Midzi, who would have turned 63 early next month, is survived by his widow Alice and three children — two boys and a girl.
He was appointed Zimbabwe’s ambassador to the United States in 1993.
Between 2002 and 2009, Midzi served as Energy Minister as well as Mines and Mining Development Minister.
He was also MP for Epworth, after winning the constituency in the 2013 general elections.
