RENEWAL Democrats of Zimbabwe will not join forces with People First which comprises ex-Zanu PF stalwarts believed to be fronted by former Vice President Joice Mujuru because it is not a political party, RDZ secretary general Trust Chikohora has said.
Chikohora said besides People First not being a political party, it was not different from Zanu PF which he blamed for the country’s economic woes.
He said his party led by former Energy minister, Elton Mangoma, believed in modern nationalism which he said embraced the aspirations of former freedom fighters but deviated from the current crop of Zanu PF leaders whom he said lived in the past without taking the country forward.
How can we join with People First when it is not even political party, it’s there in your newspapers but beyond that there is no entity called People First,” Chikohora told journalists at the Gweru press club.
“It’s a mirage that is there; we have a political party and we can’t rush to join with a nonentity which is just what people are imagining is there.”
He said the People First “so called leader” Mujuru had never announced that she is going to form a political party.
Chikohora said People First was “essentially Zanu PF” and RDZ would not join hands with people who destroyed the country’s political and economic fortunes.
“So we cannot rush to join Zanu PF which is what we are fighting against, which is what has brought Zimbabwe to where it is now,” said Chikohora.
He said his party believed in modern nationalism which embraced aspirations of freedom fighters but deviated from the current crop of Zanu PF leaders who lived in the past without taking the country forward.
“We share the initial founding values the nationalists but not what they evolved into,” he said.
“We want to restore the economic prosperity of Zimbabwe for the benefit of current and future generations.”
