Nothing works

via Nothing works – The Zimbabwean 4 March 2015 by Jera

Absolutely nothing works in Zimbabwe. The road network, water and power supply are of the lowest standard. Schools inherited by the Zanu (PF) government from the Ian Smith regime in pristine condition in 1980 are now dilapidated. There is no medication in government hospitals.

In the mortuaries, bodies spill out of the refrigerated drawers, due to lack of space. The police force is grossly underfunded, one car per precinct – except, of course, when they receive reports of MDC gatherings. Only then do resources magically appear.

Amid poverty, joblessness and external debt of $7 billion, the President blew $1 million on his birthday party, sending a loud ‘stuff you!’ to citizens and anyone thinking of investing. No lender likes an irresponsible borrower.

The past three elections have been marred by violence, intimidation and all manner of cheating. Mugabe has barred foreign observers, other than those from the AU and Sadc, who are sympathetic to him. He insists that he does not want Western interference in the country’s democratic process. But the West might argue that if you want the cash cow, you take the dung that comes with it. Money cannot simply come in briefcases, without due diligence on the part of the investors.
