POLICE in Harare have reportedly summoned senior MDC Renewal Team official, Last Maengahama, to report at Harare Central Police Station today in connection with wind-up shortwave radio sets confiscated from a non-governmental organisation he used to work for.

“I will be presenting myself to the police tomorrow (today) in the company of my lawyer Beatrice Mtetwa,” Maengahama said.

“Although we are not sure of the actual charge, police officers called me and notified me that they were going to charge me in a case involving wind-up radios reportedly confiscated at an organisation I used to work for,” the former MDC-T councillor for Glen View said.

“I was once director of an organisation called Democratic Councils Forum, then based in Gweru. We understand that the police are claiming there were legal provisions relating to communications that could have been broken during the importation of the radios,” Maengahama said.

Mtetwa was not available for comment yesterday.

Police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Simon Chazovachii initially promised to call back with more details, but was no longer reachable at the time of going to print.

A former MDC-T national executive member, Maengahama spent close to three years in remand prison together with 27 other opposition activists over the alleged murder of Police Inspector Petros Mutedza in May 2011.

Judgment in the murder case is still pending at the High Court.
