THE Zanu PF politburo has rubbished the contentious Masvingo elections held last month to choose a substantive provincial chairperson, saying fresh polls will have to be held at a date to be announced.

Speaking just after the politburo meeting last night, secretary for administration Ignatius Chombo said the party would run fresh elections in Masvingo following the decision.
“The Masvingo elections will be done afresh at a date that is yet to be discussed,” he said, without giving the reasons.
He said the resignations by the Bulawayo youth executive had been effectively dealt with by secretary of youth affairs Kudzai Chipanga and were, therefore, not discussed by the politburo.
The Bulawayo youth executive resigned en masse citing imposition of leaders and disregard of the ruling party’s constitution by senior provincial party members.
“The matter was dealt with and adequately addressed by youth secretary Cde K Chipanga and, therefore, it did not arise,” Chombo said.
Masvingo has become a political hot bed and a war front for Zanu PF factions — G40 and Lacoste — as they fight for control of the vast province.
Former provincial chairperson Ezra Chadzamira, who is reportedly linked to Lacoste, won the February polls after garnering 12 393 votes against rival Mutero Masanganise, an alleged G40 candidate, who polled 4 888, after 165 districts failed to vote in the elections owing to heavy rains.
Chombo said the politburo also received a report from Agriculture minister Joseph Made, who said the country would not be importing any maize because this year’s harvest would exceed local consumption needs.
“Made expressed satisfaction at the crop situation in the country and estimated that maize output would surpass the national annual consumption of 1,8 million metric tonnes,” he said.
Made also briefed the politburo on preparations for the winter wheat under command agriculture which is targeting to put 50 000 hectares under the programme.
