POPE Francis has appointed Reverend Father Paul Horan of the Carmelite Order as the new bishop for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Mutare.

This followed the resignation of Reverend Bishop Alexio Muchabaiwa on turning 75 years.

The Catholic Church confirmed the appointment of Bishop Horan in a statement released by the Nuncio in Harare yesterday.

“Today, 28 May 2016, (Saturday) His Holiness Pope Francis has accepted the resignation from pastoral care of the Diocese of Mutare presented by Right Reverend Bishop Alexio C. Muchabaiwa.

“At the same time the Holy Father has appointed Rev Fr Paul Horan as the new Bishop of Mutare,” reads the statement from the church.

Father Horan was born on October 17, 1962 in Dragan county, Tepperary in Ireland.

“He made his simple profession in the Order of the Carmelites on 1 September 1990 and was ordained priest on 7 June 1997.

“Since September 2001, he has been working in Zimbabwe,” further reads the statement from the Nuncio.
