The Manica provincial police spokesperson, Elsidia Filipe, said that both attacks took place on national highway seven, against Freightliner trucks travelling from the western city of Tete to the Manica provincial capital, Chimoio.

In the first attack two passengers in the truck were injured and were treated at the provincial hospital in Chimoio.

In the second incident, Filipe said that seven Renamo gunmen ordered a truck to stop. They then demanded money, and the driver gave them 2,000 meticais (about 35 US dollars).

But the Renamo group then looted the truck of the goods it was carrying and finally set it on fire.

Filipe said that the defence and security forces in the area are hunting the Renamo group, and intend to bring the gunmen to justice.
