Maputo (AIM) – Gunmen of the former rebel movement Renamo raided the small town of Maringue in the central Mozambican province of Sofala in the small hours of Wednesday morning, according to the provincial first secretary of the ruling Frelimo Party, Paulo Majacunene, cited in Thursday’s issue of the Maputo daily “Noticias”.
The raiders burnt down several houses in Maringue before members of the defence and security forces drove them away. Two people were injured in the attack, one of whom is said to be in a “very serious” condition.No further details are yet available. Maringue housed the Renamo headquarters during the closing years of the war of destabilization. It is adjacent to Gorongosa district where Renamo leader Afonso Dhlakama is currently living in a bush camp.
