THREE Harare men accused of stealing an Apple iPhone 6 mobile phone belonging to President Robert Mugabe’s youngest son, Bellarmine Chatunga, while he had gone to relieve himself at the school toilet last November, were yesterday granted $100 bail each.

The trio of Victor Josam, Tendai Makambaire and Kelvin Mwandayi allegedly approached a St John’s College student identified as Honour Mukudzei Rwodzi, who had been left in custody of the phone, and misrepresented that they had been sent by Chatunga to collect the gadget.
Following the misrepresentation, Rwodzi gave away the phone, valued at $1 500, and the suspects vanished from the scene. Upon his return, Chatunga realised the phone had been stolen and reported the matter to the police.
Police detectives managed to track down the trio and recovered the phone although its screen had allegedly been tampered with.
Presiding magistrate Vakai Chikwekwe yesterday remanded the three to March 7 after quashing prosecutor Venencia Mutake’s bid to have them remanded in custody.
Mutake had opposed the granting of bail to the three, arguing that they were likely to abscond given that the State had gathered overwhelming evidence against them.
