Zanu (PF) in Masvingo has established a committee to deal with errand individuals and companies that do not want to support its indigenisation drive amid reports that it has demanded $30 million from sugar producer Tongaat Hulett.
The party has also ordered all companies in the province to stop community development projects and channel funds towards the community share ownership scheme headed is headed by politburo member and former governor and resident minister Josaya Hungwe.
Other members of the committee include Gutu senator Shuvai Mahofa , Masvingo urban legislator Daniel Shumba, and Bikita south legislator Jappy Jaboon. In a surprise move the party has also ordered Tongaat Hulett, the country’s sole sugar milling giant, and other companies to stop all community activities.
The company had told a visiting Zanu (PF) delegation that it was spending $1 million annually on community development activities. “We have ordered Tongaat to suspend funding to all its community development projects and inject money into the community share ownership scheme,” said Hungwe. “They should also release $30 million for the community share ownership scheme,” he added.
The managing director Sydney Mutsambiwa could not be reached for comment . “We were all shocked to learn that they wanted us to release $30 million for community ownership schemes. It’s not feasible. Where do they think we are going to get the money from,” said a company official who cannot be named because he is not allowed to speak to the press.
Masvingo acting Zanu (PF) provincial chairman Paradza Chakona has accused his predecessors in the party of looting and conniving with foreign companies to sabotage the Masvingo community share ownership scheme.

There they go again, cutting off the hand that feeds it. If Hullet-Tongaat get fed up they will just moth ball the sugar estate and everyone employed will lose their jobs. They don’t have to grow sugar in Zimbabwe, they have bigger concerns in Swaziland. The government cannot run themselves let alone tell others how to. Another business to plunder.
