Mujuru will hold her inaugural rally after joining opposition politics, at the historically symbolic Stanley Square, in what some say would be a measure of her popularity.

ZimPF spokesperson, Jealousy Mawarire said his party was aware that Zanu PF was already on the ground mobilising youths, under the guidance of political commissar, Saviour Kasukuwere in a bid to disrupt the rally.

Kasukuwere was in Bulawayo on Thursday to roll out a housing project that would see more than 7 000 youths acquire houses on the outskirts of Bulawayo.

Mawarire said the timing of the ground breaking ceremony for the housing project, a few days before Mujuru’s rally in the City of Kings showed a desperate attempt by Zanu PF to hoodwink Bulawayo to snub the ZimPF rally, but warned that it would be a futile attempt.

“It is not that he (Kasukuwere) has suddenly realised the need for these youths to be empowered. He is preparing them for the orgy of violence, he is planning to unleash on the opposition,” he said.

“But as a party, we have prepared for this. We have systems in place to protect our supporters and our security teams are working with law enforcement agents to ensure all our rallies have a family, secure and serene environment that we envisage for the whole country.

“Our president has a message for Bulawayo and indeed the whole country and it is a message of hope and transformation. We urge our supporters in Bulawayo not to be intimidated. They should come in their thousands and hear their president explain our plans for today, tomorrow and the days and years to come.”

But Kasukuwere rubbished the ZimPF claims, saying he could not be stopped from implementing government programmes by a “failing-to-thrive party”.

“When is the meeting anyway? Who is attending the meeting by the way?” he quipped.

“These fellows are just an angry and desperate lot. Don’t mind them. We are delivering as a party simple and straight forward.”
