Zanu-PF should embrace repentant party cadres who were aligned to Vice President Joice Mujuru in her quest to topple President Mugabe as a way of reconciling and healing the party, Congress has heard.National Assembly Speaker, Advocate Jacob Mudenda, made the call when he read the report on the state of the party at the ongoing 6th National People’s Congress yesterday.
“Factionalism, starting from this Congress, should never again find its way into the vocabulary and practices of this revolutionary party,” said Cde Mudenda.
“What has been done is done. The next few days, months even, must be a time to heal and reconcile. Those who repent and are remorseful must not be persecuted, but we must embrace and gently mentor them back into rectitude.”
On a sad note, he said the party had experienced a devious plot to unconstitutionally oust President Mugabe through unprecedented means before or during the ongoing Congress.
“This plot involved some amongst us, under the leadership of then Vice President Joice Teurai Ropa Mujuru and her cabal of senior Politburo members who had been enticed by the Americans and some Europeans with promises that they would pour billions of dollars into Zimbabwe once they succeeded in allying with the opposition formations to oust Zanu-PF and its iconic President and First Secretary from power.
“This 6th National People’s Congress has, however, effectively put a decisive end to this treacherous and treasonous plot.”
Advocate Mudenda said Zanu-PF’s “Bhora Mugedhi-Ibhola Egedini” was a rallying call to counter prospects of the “Bhora Musango” scenario of the March 29, 2008 harmonised elections where MDC-T leader Mr Morgan Tsvangirai led by 47 percent to President Mugabe’s 43 percent before the Zanu-PF First Secretary crushed Mr Tsvangirai in the run-off.
“Suffice to note that the same people who were exposed in WikiLeaks reports as hobnobbing and having secret teas with American spies were behind this “Bhora Musango” campaign of 2008, but His Excellency, the President and First Secretary of the Party forgave them in the hope that they would show remorse, change their ways and be one with the rest of us in the party.
“But alas, they instead deepened their plotting, captured party and State structures through imposition, vote-buying, patronage, corruption and all sorts of treacherous intrigue to a point where they felt sufficiently ready to oust the President at this 6th National People’s Congress, even threatening to assassinate him,” said Cde Mudenda.
He said from 2009, the same clique usurped power from the centre through rigging and manipulating internal elective processes filling them with people who would support their cause.
“Through corruption, extortion and systematic abuse of office, they even got to a point where then VP Mujuru and her cabal controlled the economy, thus defining a parallel centre of power, which began to rival and quite often, countermand the President and First Secretary of the Party, including attempts to convene Cabinet and the Politburo while he was away, against standing rules of both the Party and Government.
“This led to the party becoming unco-ordinated, with attendant policy incoherence, as the secretary for administration ensconced himself as Vice President Mujuru’s second in command in the faction. A lot of other ills followed, creating a chronic state of near-paralysis in the party,” said Cde Mudenda.
Cde Mudenda said the Zanu-PF and President Mugabe’s crashing defeat of the opposition parties and a plethora of civil society organisations sponsored by Western countries had condemned them to the dustbins of history. He said this brought to an end, the dysfunctional inclusive Government.
Meanwhile, a congress resolutions committee has been appointed and will be chaired by Legal Affairs secretary, Cde Emmerson Mnangagwa.
The other members are Professor Jonathan Moyo, Cdes Patrick Chinamasa, Christopher and Monica Mutsvangwa, Joram Gumbo, Annastancia Ndlovu and Dr Charity Manyeruke. The resolutions are expected to be a synchronisation of recommendations and resolutions from thematic committees and provincial co-ordinating committees.
The resolutions are expected to be read out today.
