Mashonaland West women’s league has passed a vote of no confidence in its chairperson, Constance Shamu on allegations of abuse of office and for promoting divisions and chaos in the party.

In a statement on Monday, the league’s provincial commissar, Chinjai Kambuzuma, said the vote of no confidence was passed by 22 out of the 28 executive members present.

Charges against Shamu, wife of national commissar Webster Shamu, are that after the provincial elections last year, there was no voting, but she went on to allocate the top five posts to her cronies.

“This goes against our constitution that calls for elections by chairladies from districts. People were supposed to be voted into various positions, and appointed accordingly. However, the chairlady slotted people into positions from amongst her group of cronies, claiming that she works with people of her choice,” read the statement.

She was also accused of making personal decisions and purporting that they were those of the provincial women’s league.

“The chairlady went on to write a letter on behalf of the women’s league without the members’ knowledge, only to be surprised by hearing the letter being read on the PCC (Provincial Coordinating Committee). The letter claimed that the women’s league had failed to work with the chairperson (ousted Temba Mliswa) yet it was her own arrangement,” read part of the statement.

Shamu also allegedly caused divisions and chaos in the party.

“We want a true Zanu PF cadre who can stand for the good of Mashonaland West people. We want honest and exemplary leaders who are guided by our principles of unity. She has been promoting factionalism, hatred and disharmony.

“We have, accordingly, passed a vote of no confidence in Constance Tsomondo Shamu as Mashonaland West women’s league chairlady because of her divisive and segregatory behaviour.”

Following the vote of no confidence, the Mashonaland West women’s league resolved that Angeline Muchemenyi be the acting chairlady, deputised by Mary Phiri.

Shamu could not be reached for comment as her mobile phone rang unanswered.

Shamu’s predicament follows hard on the heels of Mliswa’s ouster for allegedly bringing the party’s name into disrepute. The Zimbabwe Mail
