Three Zanu-PF youth league members allegedly forged the signature of Harare provincial secretary for finance, Cde Dumisani Chipango, and solicited for about $18 000 donations since 2014.

Innocent Nyamuronda (33), Tawanda Sarari (24) and Timothy Mtanga (28) appeared before Harare magistrate Ms Rumbidzayi Mugwagwa.

The trio from Mufakose in Harare is facing nine counts of fraud. Ms Mugwagwa remanded them to March 18 on $100 bail each. As part of their bail conditions, Ms Mugwagwa ordered each to surrender their passports, to report every Friday at CID Frauds and to reside at their given addresses.

The prosecutor Mr Sebastian Mutizirwa, alleged that the trio designed a request for donations letters in the name of Zanu-PF Harare Province Youth League.

In the letters, the accused endorsed their People’s Own Savings Bank (POSB) account number 500000494921 Causeway branch.

Nyamuronda allegedly forged Chipango’s signature or undersigned some of the letters himself.

After appending signatures, the trio would approach unsuspecting companies and well wishers for donations.

They appealed to those interested in donating to the party to deposit money into the given bank account.

Well wishers were assured that their donations were going to fund several Zanu-PF annual events.

It is alleged that Mtanga would withdraw the money with his colleagues.

The trio received a total of $17 968.

The matter came to light after a copy of the forged letter facilitating the opening of the bank account was recovered.

Copies of forged letters soliciting for donations were also discovered leading to their arrest.
