THE Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (Zec) has assured residents of Mt Pleasant Heights in Harare that they will remain on the Mt Pleasant constituency voters’ roll, contrary to reports that their names would be transferred to the Mazowe South constituency voters’ roll.

Zec chairperson Justice Rita Makarau said there had been no delimitation in the country and the electoral body would stick to the 2008 Delimitation Commission boundaries in next year’s polls.

“We write to advise that there is no exercise, current, immediate or past, to delimit Mazowe South or Harare North constituencies. All constituency boundaries remain as they were after the Delimitation Report of 2008,” Justice Makarau wrote in a letter dated April 3, 2017.

“All voters will be registered in the wards and constituencies that they were set by the Delimitation Report of 2008.”

Zec’s response came in the wake of reports of an alleged illegal voter registration process taking place in the two constituencies.

The delimitation exercise is done once after every 10 years, with the last boundaries drawn in 2008.

Mt Pleasant Heights resident Warship Dumba recently approached Zec seeking clarity over reports that some residents in the constituency had their names transferred to Mazowe South.

“We hereby notify you to regularise the delimitation of Mt Pleasant constituency and ensure that residents of Mt Pleasant Heights are registered in the correct constituency,” Dumba said through his lawyers from the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR).

“We, hereby, expect your written response within seven working days of receipt of our letter, failing which we will proceed to institute legal proceedings against yourselves without further notification,” ZLHR wrote.
